Normally, cells in the body receive all the required signals to create their own extra-cellular matrix which is predominantly made of collagen. This collagen scaffold holds the cells together in the required 3-dimensional form to function properly.

	Bio Nova's pioneering technology employs not only harvesting and processing of natural tissues, but also, custom design and creation of new tissues. Bio Nova’s collagen based scaffolds may be grown by a process that allows almost unlimited design flexibility in terms of both the material and its three dimensional form.

	Alternatively, natural tissues may be harvested to produce other specific collagen based scaffolds. Methods have been developed to stabilise and sterilise the resultant scaffolds for transplant into humans. This provides almost unlimited flexibility to create tissue scaffolds perfectly designed for the human anatomy.		Bio Nova’s tissue scaffolds can be created in a controlled manner to produce the desired 3-dimensional form and shape, tissue type and architecture• and other tissue properties – surface, mural and biochemistry. The result is not just harvested tissues but purpose-grown structures. The scaffold may contain stimulants or attractants to induce natural cellular repair within the patient. Cells can be grown on the scaffold prior to implant or the scaffold can be implanted directly and the patients own cells left to form and fill the new tissue. Where the patient’s own cells are grown on the scaffold prior to implant it is possible to create a product that is tailored to the individual patient. Examples of this are endothelial cells for blood contact applications,• fibroblasts for skin and smooth muscle cells.
