Omniflow II demonstrates excellent long-term performance

The Omniflow II technology has extensive clinical experience and over 10,000 prostheses have been implantated in humans. Omniflow II has an excellent track record with very few reported problems.

Omniflow II displays superior performance to synthetic grafts in the more difficult below-knee applications. Long-term patency and performance can be expected from Omniflow II. It is known that the non-thrombogenic properties of all biological prostheses continue to improve with time as opposed to synthetic prostheses, now largely represented by PTFE, which decrease with time. Emerging data indicates that a well-implanted Omniflow II has a good chance of performing for 10 years and patent grafts have been reported over 15 years after implantation.

This Omniflow II prosthesis was patent after 7 years in the femoropopliteal position. The gross specimens demonstrate a clean and smooth flow surface with the integral polyester mesh clearly visible. There is no stenosis of the prosthesis. The prosthesis is clearly incorporated into the host tissue with thickening of the outer wall. The OmniflowII prosthesis has proven to be highly biocompatible.

The histological section shows a clean flow surface with a thin neo-intimal lining of deposited fibrous material. There is no tissue ingrowth through the wall. The mesh bundle is clearly visible within the collagen. Host tissue incorporating the prosthesis has resulted in a thick outer wall. Small capillary blood vessels have grown from the host tissue into the prosthesis wall. This microvascularisation contributes to Omniflow II's high resistance to infection.

Long-term performance in AV access

Omniflow II demonstrates excellent long-term performance in arteriovenous access applications and allows repeated puncturing with excellent healing. This histological section of a patent explant from a sheep illustrates the response of Omniflow II to repeated puncturing, three times per week for six months. The puncture site has healed with fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells present.
